Lamination is the process of overlaying one material with another in order to give it a protective layer or to make a composite material using bonded layers. Polyurethane adhesives bond differently from other adhesives. Most adhesives are heated and applied while warm, setting and forming a bond when they cool. Polyurethane lamination adhesives are also heated before application, but rather than setting when they cool, they react with moisture in the air.

This is more than just a temperature-based reaction, it’s a chemical change, and results in a bond that is much stronger than those formed by heat alone. Unlike other adhesives, polyurethane won’t melt when re-heated, and can only be removed with the use of an appropriate solvent.

Partially thanks to this increased bonding strength, Polyurethane Lamination is also more durable than many other options. Polyurethane is highly resistant to environmental factors such as water and heat, and even chemical exposure, and makes for a very strong final material.

It also bonds very quickly with other surfaces and can expedite manufacturing processes where speed is important.
